Deep is a series of 5 etudes and 1 interlude for modern classical guitar.

Each study explores a specific technique or musical idea.
The end of each study heralds the ‘exploratory’ element that will be developed in the following study.

The recordings of DEEP are the result of a collaboration with Belgian guitarist Jasper Iturrospe.

MUSIC MAP – Review for Synolon // di Franco, Negro

12th April 2022 by Gabriele di Franco
Francesco Negro, music map, new album, Piergiuseppe Lippolis, recensione, review, synolon, workin' label

So happy to share with you a wonderful review by Piergiuseppe Lippolis on Music Map.

Without ever resorting to virtuosity for its own sake, the two musicians have created a jewel at the compositional level, as demonstrated by the peaceful and wise coexistence of acoustic textures, modern embroidery and electronic inserts, whose jazz/folk afflatus integrates perfectly with the parentheses in which the purest improvisation dominates the scene.

Along the way, “Synolon” always seems to be in focus and has no moments of difficulty, from “Acqua” to “Last Song”, confirming the quality, depth and harmony of the two artists from Puglia.

SYNOLON – the new album in duo with Francesco Negro

12th March 2022 by Gabriele di Franco
Francesco Negro, ird, synolon, workin' label

🇬🇧 Friday 25 March sees the release of “Synolon”, the new recording project by two acclaimed musicians and composers from Puglia, Gabriele di Franco and Francesco Negro, which will be published in the Jazz & Contemporary catalogue of the Workin’ Label label and distributed by I.R.D. International Records Distribution.

At a time when the languages of music are becoming confused, the two musicians have created “Synolon”, which from the Greek σύνολον, means “everything”. A project that unites the musical worlds they love: songs, free impro, classical music and jazz, and with which they have succeeded in representing their different souls. The album contains nine original compositions, with the exception of Ambrogio Sparagna’s “Sogna o fiore mio”, with an original arrangement by the duo.

Sophisticated acoustic sounds mingle with electronic and modern sounds; jazz/folk accompaniments lead to moments of pure improvisation.
The titles of the tracks are largely inspired by the natural elements, Air, Water, Earth; Nebbiolina and Oltre are two instant compositions with which the musicians questioned the difference between composing and improvising. To compose you have all the time in the world at your disposal, to improvise, on the other hand, you photograph a specific instant in a journey through the unknown, a photo of what has been and will never be repeated twice in the same way.

The release of the album will be followed by the video clip of the opening track ‘Acqua’ made by Studio Sciolto, which is due for release on 1 April.

IT🇮🇹

LULELA VR (protoype)

22nd February 2022 by Gabriele di Franco
  • LULELA VR_snippet_prototype
  • LULELA VR_snippet_prototype
  • LULELA VR_snippet_prototype

LULELA is a contraction of the Italian ‘Lui’, ‘Lei’, and ‘L’altro’ (‘He’, ‘She’ and ‘The Other’).
It is a hybrid artistic performance in VR (for Oculus Quest), in which performers, a protagonist, and the audience are essentially one organism. It is a collective VR experience with an integrated music-theatre performance in which the course of the story is in the hands of the audience. Lulela is a VR-musical trip that combines emotions as loneliness and melancholia with humor and romance, addressing the theme of identity and how we define ourselves in relation to the world.
The audience can vomit rainbows, suddenly lose its hair, join a party, and much more. All this depends entirely on their choices.
In LULELA music, storytelling and VR technology merge into an innovative artistic format.

LULELA VR is not just a classical musical theatre show in virtual reality, nor just a game. It is a crossover project that aims to create a new experience that combines the possibilities of virtual reality with those of music-theatre.

Lulela VR in a nutshell

  • A participatory storytelling with multiple evolutionary possibilities
  • A unique blend of prerecorded 3D video, integrated into a VR universe
  • A story told by real performers
  • A collective experience

LULELA VR is an adaptation of its “analogue” version LULELA (prod. by Lodmuziektheatre).

SJO\CGN presents: EUROPEAN COMPOSERS

22nd November 2021 by Gabriele di Franco
arrangement, big band, cologne, competition, composition, contest, orchestra, SJO\CGN, Subway Jazz Orchestra

I’m glad to announce that I was selected s part of the project EUROPEAN COMPOSERS promoted by Subway Jazz Orchestra of Cologne.
The big band selected five young composers from all over Europe who have composed new works especially for Subway Jazz Orchestra and will be giving their world premieres on the 8th of december.
This was preceded by a Europe-wide call by the SJO for composers up to 35 years of age. From the 54 applications received, the collective selected five candidates who were awarded a commission to compose for the orchestra.

Congrats also to the other 4 selected composers:

Jorik Bergman (born 1996 in Leiden, The Netherlands) is a professional jazz flutist, composer and arranger living in Cologne. She enjoys writing for large jazz ensembles and is currently organising her next big project. On the side, she has her own jazz trio in which she plays the flute, is doing her Master’s degree in composition at the Cologne University of Music and Dance and is also a professional model. Her dream is to retire one day and build her own miniature golf course in the south of France.

Tobias Hoffmann (*1988) is a saxophonist, composer and arranger born in Germany and currently living in Vienna and Graz. Besides being the bandleader of his award-winning “Tobias Hoffmann Nonet”, he works as a sideman for various projects and bands. He is also currently working on the debut CD of his “Tobias Hoffmann Jazz Orchestra”, which will be released in 2022.

Bianca Rantala is a 22-year-old arranger, composer, pianist and big band conductor from Estonia. She is currently studying music production in Helsinki, Finland and works as a freelance musician. Rantala is the conductor of several Estonian big bands, including the Taltech Bigband, the GOMK Bigband and the New Wind Jazz Orchestra. She has composed and arranged for all kinds of ensembles, but especially for big bands, vocal groups, wind and string orchestras. In 2020 she won 1st place in the Baltic Big Band Composition Contest.

Born in 1992 in south-eastern Styria (Austria), singer, composer and pianist Ursula Reicher shows her great passion for music in her diverse work, moving in many musical styles. She completed her master’s degree in jazz composition and arranging with Ed Partyka at the Kunstuniversität Graz/Institut Jazz as well as studying music education at KUG Graz and German at KF-Uni in Graz. Her great love is her current main project ‘The Void-Quintet’, a special formation with which she released her debut album “Globular Cluster” in 2019 and was also awarded a Downbeat- Award for “Outstanding Performance” in 2019 and 2020. Ursula was also awarded a Downbeat Award for Outstanding Composition in 2020 and 2021.
